Last night's much hyped season ending episode of Big Love and the final episode of The Sopranos...before the final eight episodes (airing next year), were both disappointing.
The Sopranos felt like one long set-up, laying the groundwork for a payoff we'll have to wait months to enjoy. The episode ended on a real dull note; nothing in the way of a cliff-hanger or exciting tease as would befit the prelude to the Soprano family's final chapter.
Big Love was a big disappointment. Not that I had any high hopes for this show at this point. Excuse me if I don't feel any sort of sympathy for this family. They did a bunch of stupid things calling attention to themselves, so duh! What were they thinking? When Barb said "I got what I deserved," she was speaking for the entire family, most of all Bill. Everything about last night's episode seemed utterly contrived, predictable, and just plain stupid. I can't imagine where the storyline will go from here. Seems kind of played out to me already.
And continuing with my weekend of disappointing TV, I'm catching up with Six Feet Under on DVD and caught the episode from Season Four entitled "That's My Dog." If you've watched the show, you know exactly which episode (centering on David's character) I'm referring to. Season Four is a definite come-down from the earlier excellence of this show, and this episode in particular marked a new low. Without going into details, in case you haven't seen it, this episode was unrelenting, way too over-the-top, and at times ridiculous. And I thought very out-of-character with the rest of the show.
I'd say all of this mediocre HBO TV has me very much looking forward to Deadwood's return next Sunday, but they've already screwed that up by failing to renew it for the fourth and final season.
